I have begun a sequel to "The Eagle and the Dragon," tentatively called "The Road Leading Back to Rome." Part of the setting of the book includes the Roman invasion of Mesopotamia (Iraq) in 115AD by Emperor Trajan. I found an excellent resource on this and the antecedent annexation of Dacia (Romania) a few years earlier. That resource is "Trajan, Optimus Princeps," by Julian Bennettt. From this book, reasonably priced at $30 paperback, I was able to get the order of battle of the participating legions, their 'homeport' locations and lines of approach into Iraq, many of the commanders and governors supporting the operation, and some of the people on Trajan's staff. I recommend this book, and also "The Grand Strategy of the Roman Empire, From the First Century AD to the Third" by Edward Luttwak, an excellent overview of Roman military organization, disposition of forces, and their priority of threats.
Anyone writing on this era will find these a valuable resource for creating an historically accurate setting.
