For anyone that wants to know how people cursed/name-called in the 18th and 19th century, Francis Grose's "1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue" is a fantastic resource. There is a lot of "sailor slang" in it as well.
Even just for the entertainment value, it's well worth taking a look at.
Some of the words you will learn:
